Silicon nitride SN282 of Kyocera was selected as the material for the ceramic components; the material was used in the CGT-302 type ceramic gas turbine in CGT project and proved its high temperature durability. The development schedule is shown in Figure 3. The basic design, detail design and engine manufacturing were camed from 1999FY to 2001FY. Long-term engine tests were started from 2002FY. Partial-load (-5000 kW)tests and full-load (8000 kW) test were carried out. PRESENT STATUS OF THE DEVELOPMENT Material Characteristic 1) Static Strength Kyocera SN282 was selected for the ceramic components such as the combustor liners, the transition ducts, and the fist stage turbine nozzles; the material was used in the CGT302 project and proved its high temperature durability.

19 Contact stress induced failures have occurred in most programs. The Ford Motor Company 820 automotive engine developed during the 1970s successfullyoperated for about 25 hours, but failed during shutdown when high friction at the curvic coupling interface of the ceramic rotor with the metal shaft resulted in a contact stress failure [191. In the same Brittle Materials Design, High Temperature Turbine Program, Westinghouse encountered fractures at the interface between stator vanes and end caps in the 30 MW engine components rig testing [211].
