He spent enormous sums on the estate, and H. S. Goodhart-Rendel described the church as ‘a perfectly preserved and unaltered specimen of nouveauriche-dom in the 1850s’. The new church was designed by Henry Jones Underwood, of Oxford, in the same simple lancet style that he had used for the church he built in 1835–6 for John Henry Newman at Littlemore, where Isaac Williams had been Newman’s first curate. At the time of the consecration of Llangorwen it was stated that ‘the east window and interior of the chancel is . . formed on the model of the East end of the Church at Littlemore’. Like Littlemore, Llangorwen had a stone altar – the first set up in Wales since the Reformation.

The entrance is in the middle of one of the long walls and the interior is now arranged with the original pulpit against one of the short walls in the middle of the communion enclosure. Box pews are arranged to face the pulpit, and there is tiered seating in a deep gallery across the opposite short wall. NY 29.
