In the twentieth century, the last major influx of archivists and archival programs occurred in the 1970s. That wave of new professionals challenged the archivist-historian approach to entering the workforce, as many attended library schools instead. During that period, archivists took special interest in documenting diversity, the underrepresented, and social movements. The bicentennial celebrations of the decade created not only new interest in the nation’s history, but led to the founding of many new historical societies, museums, and special collections departments on college and university campuses.

Archivists must also look to other fields for training in areas that are intersecting their work. Technological training workshops including managing electronic records, and creating finding aids using standards such as Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Encoded Archival Context (EAC), and Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), are in great demand. Basic archival skills programs devoted to topics such as preservation, copyright law, arrangement and description, and managing repositories are constantly being updated and remain popular.

Instead of merely trying to dazzle students with stories from the archival trenches, he presented us with the realities, challenges, and opportunities for archivists in the twenty-first century. Over a decade after I finished library school, he contacted me without any warning to suggest that I write a book on archivists who work in higher education.
