Hasan al-Hudaybi was approached in 1950. A first meeting between him and leaders of the Brotherhood was initiated by Munir al-Dilla, a member of the Brotherhood who was particularly well connected to the Egyptian upper class of wealthy landowners of Upper Egypt. Although it is unclear whether the purpose of these meetings was related to the search of a new Murshid, it became clear during the course of the year 1951 that the leading circle was searching for a compromise candidate. The ideal was to find a well-respected public figure, but one who lacked influence within the Brotherhood, since the interim leaders of the organisation had no intention of giving up their power and control.
